Dr. Anthony Fauchi |
Dr. Anthony Fauchi, director of the National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases in America, said that although there is no
formal recommendation on the double mask, this may be the "common
approach."
"There is no recommendation"
to wear a double mask, Fauchi said, but noted that "there are a lot
of people who take a common approach."
"If you're talking about a
physical barrier, and as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
recommends, you want at least two layers inside the mask as a physical barrier, then you
feel it would be better to have a physical barrier, so there's nothing wrong
with someone wearing masks" . Fauchi
said he often wears two masks.
"Can we make a general
recommendation that has no scientific basis yet? No, but when science comes and
tells us it's better or not, you'll see a recommendation from the CDC."
Dr. Rochelle Wallensky, director of
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, said the CDC is currently conducting a scientific assessment and is
considering its recommendations on the double mask based
on the latest science."
Studies have shown that the monolayer
mask is not effective in preventing the wearer from spraying, even two- and
three-layer cloth masks are only partially protective, somewhere at 50% to 60%
effectiveness.
Fauchi, A 2020 study found that surgical masks were 50% effective in protecting wearers and about 60% to 70% in protecting others. But if you put a surgical mask under the cloth mask, experts believe it is more than 90% effective in removing particles.
